Team Manager – Trading Standards
Job Summary
To provide day to day management of the Trading Standards Team who operate within a defined geographical area.
To ensure that the team meets all performance and quality expectations held by service stakeholders.
To oversee the delivery and effectiveness of both specialisms within the team and ensure this work meets the needs of the borough and its residents.
To lead on the continuous development and improvement of service delivery, including effective work planning an understanding of current and future local needs.
To participate in joined up and coordinated activity with other teams within the service area to support the achievement of the overall aims and aspirations of the wider service area
To be the lead specialist for Trading Standards related activity in the borough and to oversee the responsibilities of Chief Inspector of Weights & Measures and Senior Appropriate Officer for financial investigations.
Your current duties and responsibilities will be -
To ensure your team are interpreting and implementing legislation, codes of practice and policies appropriately and providing technical direction where required.
To ensure effective operational practices and processes are in place and being followed to ensure services delivered are of a consistently high quality and effective in meeting the needs of public
To maintain an oversight on all enforcement action taken by the team to ensure it is effective and appropriate.
To keep abreast of national and local developments in the specialist area and recommend changes to operational delivery where appropriate
To oversee the statutory duties of Chief Inspector of Weights and Measures and fulfil this role if suitably qualified.
To work on own initiative and under the direction of the Operations Manager
To write clear and concise reports and correspondence in relation to performance and delivery of the team and how this is supporting the geographical area within which the team operates.
To provide support and direction to the Senior Officers within the team on both technical and staff related issues.
To take a lead on understanding of local priorities, needs and demands for the support the team offers within a defined geographical area, and to understand and interpret intelligence and information to support a planned response to how priorities, needs and demands may change in future.
To support officers to assess situations and make decisions on further action or the giving of advice as required based on their final assessment
To allocate and monitor workloads appropriately following an assessment of complaints and information received.
To be the first point of escalation where businesses and members of the public may have concerns about the nature and delivery of frontline services from the team.
To oversee the planning and implementation of a schedule of inspections, investigations on regulated organisations which require completion by the team.
To lead on the establishment and maintenance of productive working relationships with managers and teams across various specialisms to provide a seamless and co-ordinated approach to the delivery of services which protect people living in, working in and visiting the borough.
To exchange information with other teams within the service area to solve individual and joint problems to support the making of effective a co-ordinated decisions across the service area.
To lead on the development and delivery of an annual team plan which aligns to directorate objectives and the delivery of the 2030 Vision
To arrange and chair team and other meetings as appropriate and undertake such personal training and development as may be required, as well as contributing to the development of the wider team
To participate in joined up and coordinated activity with other teams within the service area as directed to support the achievement of the overall aims and aspirations of the wider service area
To deputise for the Operations Manager in their absence.
To comply with the Council’s Financial Procedures and Accounting Instructions
To actively participate in the Council’s and Service’s Customer Care Quality Policies and Procedures.
To participate in the operation of the Council’s Appraisal Scheme.

Such other duties as may be appropriate to achieve the objectives of the post to assist the Thematic Area in the fulfilment of its objectives commensurate with the post holder's salary grade, abilities and aptitudes.
The post holder must at all times carry out his/her responsibilities with due regard to the Council's policy, organisation and arrangements for Health and Safety at Work.
