Full Vacancy Description

Public Protection is a combined service providing residents with Trading Standards, Licensing and Environmental Health functions. Our current opportunities are based within the Environmental Health section, arising as a result of maternity cover and acting cover for 6 months with potential to extend.

We are proud of our work across the department: in Environmental Protection, with a dedicated Air Quality Action Plan Manager, and air quality meeting targets across the borough; our Nuisance provision has led to the Council being listed as the quietest borough in London; our Food Hygiene and Safety provision has shown increases on 5 rated premises year on year, and reduced the number of 1 rated premises to only 1 at the start of this year. We have undertaken high profile investigations in both food and health and safety in recent years, leading to identification of new risk markers for our enforcement visits.

You will undertake a key role in our dynamic multi-disciplined team, with opportunities to show your knowledge and develop your skills across the full range of enforcement and investigative duties. We welcome applications from staff currently working in specialised areas with qualifications or aptitude to other enforcement areas in environmental health.

You will be responsible for making decisions on how to proceed with cases using your professional judgement to reach a justifiable and robust decision. You will be investigating complaints from residents and assessing evidence such as data from noise monitoring equipment.  You will be undertaking inspections and project work to deliver the service priorities, and you will take appropriate enforcement action where necessary in line with our enforcement policy.

The post offers a varied work environment in a supportive and friendly team, working to promote the welfare of residents, visitors, and the workforce within the borough.

You will hold a recognised Environmental Health qualification to degree or equivalent level. Additional training and qualifications in relevant areas such as acoustics, contaminated land, NEBOSH and food competency are highly desirable.

You will have experience in this discipline, including working with relevant agencies and with other teams and local authorities. You will possess a good working knowledge of current policy in at least one area of statutory nuisance, pollution, food and health and safety, with a willingness to learn and apply skills from other areas. You will have effective written and verbal communications skills, and a flexible approach to working with colleagues and other teams.

You are self-motivated and able to evidence essential skills in managing caseloads and working effectively within Public Protection Services. You will have direct experience of working in an enforcement environment with key stakeholders including members, residents, external agencies, business partners and the private sector.

We would also welcome applications from new Environmental Health degree graduates who may not have experience in all of these areas but are enthusiastic and quick to learn.

We are developing our teams to work in new and more innovative ways, and your positive approach to change and transformation will be vital in taking part in this process.

A driving licence is essential for this post.
