Job Description               Environmental Health Officer

 

Job Purpose:

 

To carry out enforcement, advisory and promotional duties relating to the delivery of environmental health services.

 

Main Duties and Responsibilities:

 

To undertake an allocated case load of inspections, and deal with all requests for service and related investigations

 

Promoting improved standards by providing information and training to local businesses and advising consumers.

 

Undertaking duties as required for delivering port health functions.

 

To assist in maintaining the database relating to environmental health functions, ensuring that conventional and computer records and systems are correct and up to date.

 

To attend training courses, seminars, etc as agreed in accordance with identified training needs.

 

To comply with the CIEH requirements for CPD and to keep up to date generally with relevant professional work areas, legislation and technical developments in the environmental health field.

 

Promote and contribute to the development of the Council’s “One Team” philosophy and approach to service delivery.

 

To contribute to corporate projects and cross service initiatives as appropriate and in line with the Council’s commitment to a “Customer First” ethos.

 

To undertake such other work as may be required from time to time by the Assistant Chief Executive or Head of Service consistent with the duties and grading of the post.

Person Specification

 

1 Experience

 

Experience in food safety and health and safety enforcement.

 

Use of ICT systems.

 

Enforcement of relevant statutory requirements.

 

2 Skills & Abilities

 

Good general report and letter writing.

 

Preparation of technical reports following inspections.

 

Evidence gathering for enforcement purposes.

 

Data evaluation and manipulation.

 

Delivery of food safety and health and safety training courses

 

and effective good quality presentations.          

 

3 Knowledge

 

Food safety and health and safety hazards in the local authority enforcement sector.

 

Current food safety and health and safety legislation, FSA codes of practice and working guides.

 

Principals and practice of controlling rats, mice, vermin and nuisance pests and also pest control legislation.

 

PACE, Criminal Investigation and Procedures Act, RIPA, preparation of evidence, service of statutory notices. 

 

Transmission and control of food borne disease and other notifiable infectious disease.

 

4 Education/Qualifications

 

Member of the Chartered Institute of Environmental Health:

 

Post Graduate qualification in food safety or health and safety

 

5 Other Requirements:-

 

Driving Licence.

 

The role is for an initial three months, but may be extended.

The Council would consider candidates on a part time basis

Pay is £25.70 per hour PAYE plus holiday or £32 per hour (umbrella company).  The Council is prepared to go up to £35 per hour for the right candidate
